From October 7 to 10, work on Tokioriki focused on the feel of the forest escape minigame and on reviewing the scenarios so they fit the flow of the story. The part we most want you to see this week is the forest escape minigame, adjusted from a recording of my own playtest. I went through the things that bothered me while playing—how the path looks, how the pursuer's presence comes across—and fixed them one by one.
A first pass over the character scenarios
An AI-assisted first pass over the dialogue and staging of the character scenarios beyond the demo is now complete. Suggestions for fixes have been gathered, but they are still only candidates. I will choose which ones to adopt from here.
The approach for this review is to first make sure nothing is out of step with the timeline of the main story, and then put my energy into the staging. Even for short scenes, I will look at the dialogue and staging with where they sit in the main story in mind. Checking them in the actual game is still ahead.
Tuning the forest escape from a playtest
The forest escape minigame in the Showa chapter was adjusted based on a recording of my own playtest and the notes I made at the time. I revisited how the path looks while you are being chased, how the character moves along walls, and how the pursuer's approach is conveyed.
What bothered me in the playtest, and what I fixed
I adjusted how the path is shown and how dark it is while you are being chased, as well as a corner partway through. In the final stretch, I made the character a little smaller and revised how they move along walls so they get caught less often.
I also worked on the pursuer's movement and the sense of them closing in. In addition, the button sound on the minigame start screen changed from a page-turning sound to the same switch sound used on the settings screen.
The hardest part
The hardest part this week was the test play to make sure the game can still be cleared properly in “Rifujin” (Unreasonable) mode. Playing on a keyboard, I found it hard to walk smoothly—it may be easier with a controller.
What to check in the next playtest
The automated checks pass after the fixes. In the next playtest, I will check how the path, the movement along walls, and the chase with the pursuer actually feel.
The button sound also still needs to be checked by actually playing it.
Reordering when the episodes appear
The short character episodes that unlock based on affection are now placed at points that fit the flow of the main story. This is to line up the period each episode depicts with the point at which you read it.
Important scenes that would stop fitting the main story once their period has passed now have a deadline for when they can be read. Some episodes that could not be reached before can now be reached as well.
The placement changes and data checks are done, but I still need to play through the main story myself to see whether the flow feels natural.
Next week
In the next playtest, I will check the feel of the forest escape minigame I fixed this week. The reordered episodes also still need a check through the main story. As for the suggestions gathered in the scenario review, I am at the stage of choosing which ones to adopt.
Tokioriki is a visual novel that spans eras and lets you relive the pain of choices that have no right answer. It is fully voiced in Japanese, with English subtitles.
